5 Questions with Robert Appelgate, Vice President, Construction

Recently named the 2024 Greater Houston Builders Association’s Custom Home Superintendent of the Year, we had five questions for Vice President of Construction, Robert Appelgate.

1. As the VP of Construction at On Point Custom Homes, what do you do?

Now that’s a long list! My main priority is ensuring all our projects in the construction phase are on track and being built as designed. That means I oversee and work with our Project Managers and visit the job sites every day to check in on their status. Additionally, I look over all the plans before the homes even start construction to make sure all the details are captured and ensure that our team knows exactly what we’re building. I sit in on all the engineer meetings to make sure everything is addressed and work through any problems with the architect and engineers to ensure our client’s vision is properly brought to life.

I’m also heavily involved in our bidding process making sure our subcontractors understand the architectural plans and specific details about the home. It’s my job to build relationships with our construction partners and make sure everyone is up to date with the newest products and building science techniques so see can incorporate them into our homes.

I believe in leading by example and working closely with the team so our collaborations in the office translate for our client’s homes in the field! I have a passion for the homebuilding process and make sure our client’s satisfaction is top of mind.

Enjoy the process and take it one day at a time.”

2. If you could give advice to anyone thinking of buying a custom home, what would it be?

Enjoy the process and take it one day at a time! There are a lot of decisions to be made throughout the custom home process. Don’t let it overwhelm you! We’re here to guide and help you through that process so you enjoy it! It’s not everyday you get to build your dream home – so make sure you have fun doing it.

3. What do you do when you are not at work?

I enjoy being outdoors, so you can find me fishing or enjoying nature when I’m not at the office or on a jobsite.

4. Do you have a favorite story of something that happened while building a house?

At a custom home I did a couple of years ago, I was going over the details of how to lay the wood floors with our flooring team. They asked me if we considered laying the floor in a herringbone pattern and I told them no as that was not discussed with the homeowners. Just as the words came out of my mouth, my phone rang. It was the homeowners telling me they were on their way to the house because they saw an entryway with a herringbone pattern and wanted to know if it was too late to add that to their home. Sometimes the timing is just perfect!

5. With it being only a few days until Halloween, what is your favorite candy?

Peanut Butter Cups. Who can resist chocolate and PB?!
