Hilshire Village: The Smallest Memorial Village

Hilshire Village, Texas, is a small, incorporated community located within the larger Houston area. Founded in 1955 by Frank Bruess, Hilshire Village was originally part of a 30-acre plot of land purchased by Bruess and his mother in the 1940s. The village was almost called “Tall Pines” but was later renamed “Hilshire” after an English country estate.  

In the early 1950s, residents of the area sought to incorporate as their own municipality to avoid higher taxes and water rates imposed by the city of Houston. After two failed attempts, the residents finally succeeded, and Hilshire Village was officially incorporated in 1955.

Today, Hilshire Village is a thriving community with a population of 811 residents. It is comprised of approximately 304 residences, small businesses, and churches. Hilshire Village is a zoned municipality and part of a cluster of six incorporated municipalities known as the Memorial Villages.
